IKE’S LIST OF DOMAINS AT AUCTION FOR Saturday, November 30th

We went to the movies yesterday and didn’t enter any stores, didn’t even buy anything online.

The movie we saw was Knives Out, a pretty good movie overall, I don’t think it was as good as some of the reviews made it out to be.

While it was good, it had one major technical medical problem that irritates the hell out of me.

I might need to add a spoiler alert here, but not really it won’t ruin the movie for you.

I’ve talked about opiates and narcan (naloxone) in the past several times, even before it was a huge talking point. Narcan is not a new miracle drug, it’s been around for years and years, but the marketing changed because they were handing it out to everyone, police, OTC, EMS to leave at home.

Of course the price shot up and everyone seemed to have this idea that it was some new miracle antidote for opiate overdose. An opiate overdose knocks out the respiratory drive, most any opiate use slows down the respiratory rate, in fact most people that use heroin on a regular basis probably drop their respiratory rate to something that would make it seem like they weren’t breathing to the casual observer.

They dance a fine line between getting high and death.

But here’s the thing that pisses me off from the movie: (probably a reflection of the real life misconception) In the movie they project this idea that Narcan is the only thing that will counter act a morphine overdose, that the person will die, without question, if he doesn’t get it. All she needed to do was to ventilate that dude, either with a barrier device like a pocket mask, or a Bag Valve mask, or even mouth to mouth respirations.

It’s irresponsible for a movie that will be distributed all over the world to get this wrong. Most people are clueless to begin with on these simple things like CPR or tourniquets, but to mislead the public on something that happens everywhere and everyday, and that could be stopped, is horrible.

How many people will see a friend or loved one not breathing from an overdose, but still with a pulse, and think “well shit, I can’t do anything, I don’t have any narcan”

Not only do they screw this up once, they do it again. In a later seen someone is talking then stops breathing and later dies even after immediate rescue breaths were given (well chest compressions too, but they wouldn’t have been needed at that point) When you stop breathing from opiates, your heart slows down and eventually stops, but again, someone or something could breath for you indefinitely. So this scene gives the impression that CPR/rescue breathing doesn’t work. It’s complete horse shit.

They should take the time to add a PSA at the end of the movie about basic CPR and or rescue breathing, maybe even give a $2 pocket mask away at each showing. And how the hell do you spend $Millions on a movie production and can’t find one poor bastard standing around to ask if you got the medical part right?

It’s stupid and negligent. I don’t think movies should be required to try and save people and I don’t think they should be required to have a good message, but they shouldn’t do things that make a bad situation worse.

Do No Harm.

IKE’S LIST OF DOMAINS AT AUCTION FOR Tuesday, November 26th

I sold another name last night with a BIN that was almost double the price clearly visible on the landing page of the domain. We’ve mentioned before that maybe the landing pages aren’t displaying everywhere. This lander was from HugeDomains so there wasn’t any ads that might have blocked the page.

If the landing page was indeed displaying in the ip location of the buyer and they didn’t even look at it, then this is another example of the power of the BIN registry path impulse purchase.

This sale probably never happens in any other format, maybe it still would have, who knows, but every step added decreases the likelihood of the sale completing. That’s an important point to remember even with unpriced names that you plan on negotiating. Any step or barrier, no matter how small, that is removed will increase the chances of the sale going through.

IKE’S LIST OF DOMAINS AT AUCTION FOR Saturday, November 23rd

I’m throwing this list together with reckless abandon so I can drive to DC as soon as I’m done and fish in a catfish tournament. I probably won’t sleep at all, I was running around all day trying to put together a boat that would work.

The boat that I’ll attempt to use, I’ve never had in the water. We just finished welding a rod rack together at 01:30. I don’t even know if it floats.

This could all have been avoided if the guy that I was supposed to fish with hadn’t wussed out around noon today. I could have thrown in the towel, let that defeat me, but no, I won’t let it. Instead I’ll fish in 20 degree weather, in a boat that may or may not float, with a temporary registration that’ll get me stopped by the Coast Guard or Maryland DNR, or the Park Police, or DC Metro police, or any of the other agency’s that like to harass small fishing boats.

Keyword Researcher

Packet.com – Having Your Brand Buttoned Up is Critical

Originally a classical musician, Jacob Smith has deep experience with online marketing and customer success, and a proven track-record for developing highly productive global teams.  As a partner at the SEO firm Dinkum Interactive, Jacob created and implemented high-growth web strategies for hundreds of campaigns, driving measurable business results for universities, nonprofits, B2B suppliers, and luxury eCommerce retailers.

A native of Southern California and a veteran of Philadelphia, Jacob is based in Vermont and holds degrees from Carnegie Mellon and Temple Universities.  When not chatting in Slack, he can be found playing with his kids, his bassoon, or his BBQ.

Mike:  Hi Jacob, tell me about Packet.com and what you provide.

Jacob: Packet is a bare metal cloud, which means we enable developers and enterprises to consume physical infrastructure with full automation, just like AWS, GCP and Azure.

Mike:  Talk about how Packet was chosen as the name of the company.  What hoops did you have to jump through to get the domain name? Can you share what it cost?

Jacob: If you’re an internet geek, you’ll know that a ‘packet’ is how we package up and transmit data across the network.  Since the one thing you have to buy from a cloud provider is network, we figured that Packet was both a meaningful and yet humanizing name for a new cloud startup.  Getting the domain is always the hard part, of course!  We started with packethost.net and then after finding the owner of packet.net (a company in Japan had rolled up a ton of ISPs, including a Florida based ISP that  used packet.net) we were able to acquire our first “real” domain.  Funny enough it was made possible  by having lunch with a distant cousin, who manages domain portfolios for big companies.

Acquiring packet.com was a longer process – especially after the domain was acquired by a sophisticated domain seller.  We traded notes for about a year, but as the company really started to take off with some new venture funding, we knew it was time to acquire and so we quickly came to an agreement.  There are few things as important as your brand, so having packet.com as our home has been fantastic.

Mike:  You are a co-founder of the company.  While we could discuss this for hours, what’s involved in founding a new company?   You have the investment rounds listed on your site.  How difficult is this process?

Jacob: As most founders will tell you, starting a company is easy, but growing a company is hard.  It’s a constant process of reinvention, and so having a strong set of core values or guiding principles has really helped us along the way.  In terms of fundraising, we definitely earned our battle scars but have ended up with fantastic investors.  Much like a marriage, it’s all about finding the right partners who believe in you and your vision, and can help you execute as the challenges come along.

Mike:  You’ve got a strong background in SEO.  How has that skill crossed over into your current role?

Jacob: Absolutely!  Although I don’t put a ton of time into Packet’s SEO myself at this stage, I think the user-centric viewpoint that digital marketing and SEO in particular taught me has been super critical.  I always found SEO to be about 50% art and 50% science,  and as CMO my portfolio reflects a similar balance: we run a good number of metrics-driven campaigns, but also invest heavily in positioning our brand in front of customers in unique and meaningful ways, such as through live events and content. A mentor once told me: don’t try to be unique…try to be special!  How will you stand out from all those other links, right?

Mike:  How important has a keyword domain name played as the home of your online presence?  What advantages does it give you over the competition?

Jacob: We moved from one memorable and easy to spell domain (packet.net) to another (packet.com) and honestly I don’t think it has changed our digital strategy significantly.  That being said, we sell an incredibly non-transactional product: our customers can spend millions of dollars per year with us, and trust our platform with their entire business.  In this way, having your brand buttoned up is critical.

Mike:  Can you share the traffic numbers you receive at Packet.com?

Jacob: Sure!  We have fairly modest numbers, around 20k visitors per month.

Mike:  How about your history as classical musician? How does one make the shift from fine music to high tech?

Jacob: Lots of musicians and artists find their way into tech – I think due to the unique combination of discipline, ability to follow rules, creative  and collaborative nature. I’ve always been interested in technology, and so making the leap was more about building upon my interests. It also helps sometimes to be a starving artist…lots of motivation to figure things out.  :)

Mike:  As an entrepreneur, do you have any favorite books that you feel have helped mold who you are as a leader?

Jacob: I’ve really enjoyed Gino Wickman’s approach to running entrepreneurial businesses, so I would check out “Traction”.   It provides a simple, metrics-driven process that just works.  I’m also a big fan of history, and simply love Walter Isaacson’s biography of Ben Franklin: the original American hacker-entrepreneur!

IKE’S LIST OF DOMAINS AT AUCTION FOR Saturday, November 16th

I’m in Western New York state, trying to catch Steelhead and Brown trout in the streams around Rochester. It’s fricken cold, there’s snow on the ground and the fish aren’t biting.

IKE’S LIST OF DOMAINS AT AUCTION FOR Saturday, November 9th

The domain MountainBikeShop.com is at auction, ending today and is sitting around $220 with a Godaddy Valuation just under $3k.

It seems like a good domain right? You know what it is, you could go to their store or website and know without a shadow of a doubt what they do before you get there.

On the surface it looks good, it has bids so if you were a new domainer you could bid with a certain level of confidence that this is a desirable domain that would sell, because others are bidding on it. :)

I think this domain sucks.

I don’t hate the concept of this domain, as a group of words bound together that make sense, and in the past I would have said it was decent. I’d even pay reg fee for the thing right now.

But this is the problem, Domains like this that look good but will never sell, well except maybe to other domainers. It’s hard to turn it down, I think it would probably be a mistake to pay anything above $10. It’s tempting if only because at first glance it looks like a domain that should have value.

This is why I think it’s a bad domain:

First, the whole point of the exercise is to buy names that have some chance of selling to an end user for some multiple of auction or registration price. Is it a name that a bike business would buy?

The name is too specific and there are too many alternative versions available for a business to pay a domainers retail price. More importantly, bike shops don’t name their businesses anything close to this. Here’s a list of bike shops close to me, right out of the Google SERP. They’re mostly brandables, GEO’s or Owner identity names.

Rails to Trails
Bicycle Outfitters
Leed’s Cyclery
Gung Ho Bikes
Worldwide Cyclery
Universal Cycles
The Cycle Works
In Gear Cycling and Fitness
Holmes Cycling and Fitness
Downhill From Here
Lancaster Bicycle Shop
The Bike Shak
Green Mountain Cyclery
Roy’s Bike Shop
Deluxx Bikes
The Common Wheel Bicycle Shop
Jack’s Bike Shop
Era Ski and Bike Shop

All of these store are within 50 miles of me. None of them use anything close to this domain. You would think that with all the alternate extensions these small businesses would be fighting over keyword domains for their brand and websites.

They are not. According to NBDA.com, the national bicycle dealers association, in 2015 there were around 3800 Specialty bike dealers in the US alone. I assume that means small non chain bike shops. ( that’s not a pun, these bikes have chains)

While the number of bike shops is down from a decade ago, it’s still quite a few and that’s just in the us. You would think somewhere in the world there would exist a bike shop that would want this name or something similar to use as their domain.

If your still not sold on my idea, that this name won’t sell, let’s look at the past usage and alternate extensions.

The name has been registered since 1999, there is nothing in Archive.org to suggest that it was ever used for anything other than parking or had any content at all. The domain is currently registered in 7 extensions and here’s what they do.

MountainBikeStore.com Expired never had content
MountainBikeStore.se Registered doesn’t resolve
MountainBikeStore.be Registered doesn’t resolve
MountainBikeStore.online German, “configuration error”
MountainBikeStore.eu Registered doesn’t resolve
MountainBikeStore.co.uk Registered doesn’t resolve
MountainBikeStore.nl Redirects to a Dutch outdoor store

These were once registered but are now deleted.

MountainBikeStore.net Deleted
MountainBikeStore.org Deleted
MountainBikeStore.biz Deleted
MountainBikeStore.it Deleted

You might make the argument that they’re buying it for “traffic”. Godaddy tracks and publishes those numbers and it’s showing none, no traffic at all. Let’s be honest with ourselves, most domains have little value for type in traffic, it just doesn’t work that way anymore, especially with longtails. Certain domains will provide diminishing traffic from old links, but no one is typing this name into the browser. I’m sure there are some short, common words or known brands that get type in traffic.

It all comes back to the domains ability to be used as a brand or an easy to remember website. Hell, it doesn’t even have to be an actual store, just someone’s idea or their dream of building a business, for it to work as far as we’re concerned. No one is dreaming about this name.

So unless you like collecting things that won’t sell, like a hoarder, or you think I’m being ridiculous and possibly bidding on the name myself, you should avoid bidding on names that won’t sell.

I reiterate my point that new domainers and also those who have trouble picking good names from the ocean of bad, probably shouldn’t be bidding just because others are bidding.

If your perception of a good domain is out of whack at the lower end it won’t suddenly improve by paying $200-$500.

IKE’S LIST OF DOMAINS AT AUCTION FOR Tuesday, November 5th

As I was doing this list I watched the latest DomainSherpa.com episode featuring Michael Phelps and Peter Parker.

As always, I’m skeptical of basing your buying strategy on the amount of existing bids and bidders. I understand the concept, and think it works if you know what a good salable domain is to begin with, but there are too many crappy domains with bids, particularly at Godaddy. Maybe I’ll adjust my skepticism to Godaddy alone, if you’re using DropCatch or Namejet you can see who the bidders are, so at least you’ll know successful domainers are doing the bidding.

The Godaddy valuation and traffic tools, are great metrics, but like any metric they can also be great detractors, giving “value” to shit. So use them wisely.

Above all else, choose names that someone will want to use. Like Cyger said, write that out and post it to your domain work space.

The other thing you need to keep in mind is knowing who your target buyer is. I know I write about this type of thing a lot, but in the sub $5K level the game is different. Anyone, could buy any domain, for any price within this range and pay between $8 to $5k, simply based on situation, timing and the marketing/exposure of that name. At this level, the buyer might not even know what they’re looking for, they probably don’t know how domains work, they think that Godaddy is owns all these “websites” .

The lower the sales price the more likely this concept will be in play. I’m convinced that there are thousands of names not even registered, that maybe never have been registered, but that could be sold well above registration fee, with exposure to the registration path and the right timing.

Most registrars show available reg fee names in the registration path, I’d be interested in seeing how many of those sell.

That’s what I mean when I say you need to know who your buyer is at this level. It’s someone that just wants a decent name, a name that meets that requirements of a good domain. They’re probably not looking for great names, but they’ll pay more the reg fee for good domains, be the names currently registered or not.

I’m not speculating on any of this, I’ve sold domains that I hand registered the day before, for retail prices. I’ve sold hand caught and hand spun names, I know I’d be selling a ton more if I lowered the prices to below $1K, but I’m still not sure where the best breakdown of price is, so I’m always experimenting. Like a Jackass I’ve “sold” hundreds of names that I let expire and drop.

I’m not saying this so that someone goes out and hand registers numerous domains thinking that they’ll sell. I want people to think about what they’re buying, whether it has 100 bidders or is available for registration: Will a company somewhere find value in it? Don’t forget that not all perceived “great domains” are salable. There are plenty of domains that get passed around from domainer to domainer that will never sell to an end user.

I’m rambling, but before I go, I’ve spun a few of the keywords from the Sherpa review submitted list. These are spun and may or may not have been previously registered. (in the past I’ve looked through old drop lists to come up with this type of list) The might not ever sell, They might not even mean anything, but they could be brands that meet the needs of a lower end buyer looking for something, brandable and memorable.

IKE’S LIST OF DOMAINS AT AUCTION FOR Saturday, November 2nd

I forgot that enom expired inventory now goes to Godaddy. I was reminded today while going through the list and seeing names that looked familiar.

I thought I was caught up on my Godaddy renewals so I wasn’t expecting to find names that I own or used to own up for expired auction, then I saw one that I was pretty sure I owned, I never really know for sure since I’m such of mess.

I checked the whois which was redacted but when enom showed as the registrar I knew it was probably mine. So before doing any more work on this post, I had to start transferring about 40 domains that were expired. Why were there that many expired domains at enom? Because I’m stupid and do the same stupid things over and over lol.

Here’s a tip for dealing with enom, or Netsol and a few others that make it a pain in the ass to get your auth codes. Call their support and request all authcodes for all your domains at some point when you’re feeling motivated to talk to customer support that knows nothing about domains. You don’t have to transfer them right away just store the info.

I keep the email that they send, that way I can search for the email, as I’d never find it if I tried to store it somewhere else. Maybe it’s a security risk, but If I had to do a risk benefit analysis on the whole situation, I’m sure I’d find I’m the bigger risk of losing my domains than them getting stolen from poor handling of auth codes

Netsol and Register are the obvious horrible authcode culprits, I’m actually not sure if enom gives you the codes easily before they expire or not, but after they expire you have to jump through hoops.
